Ownership & Connection Help

Platform Property Verification Error

Use this guide when Search Console cannot confirm ownership of an Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube account, when authorization expires or when a previously working property asks you to reconnect.

Do not share login credentials or verification codes. Complete authorization only through Google Search Console and the official sign-in page for the connected platform.

Common verification problems

The wrong platform account openedYour browser may already be signed in to a different profile, channel or brand account.
Authorization was deniedThe platform login flow was cancelled, blocked or did not receive the required permission.
The external login expiredSearch Console periodically rechecks ownership, and an expired connection can pause access until you sign in again.
You no longer control the accountA role, password, ownership or organization change may have removed the access used during setup.

How to fix a platform-property verification error

Follow these steps in order. Most errors come from account selection, stale sign-in sessions or lost access.

1

Read the exact Search Console message

Determine whether the problem is failed ownership, expired authorization, unavailable access or a missing property option. These are different problems.

  • Take a screenshot of the message for your records.
  • Note whether the property previously worked.
  • Record the account or channel shown in the error.
Why this matters: An empty report is not the same as a verification failure.
2

Confirm that you still control the platform account

Open the relevant platform directly and verify that you can sign in to the exact profile, channel or account you want to connect.

  • Check the handle, profile name and avatar.
  • For YouTube, confirm the correct channel or Brand Account.
  • For managed accounts, confirm that your role still permits account access.
Stop here if: You cannot access the account outside Search Console. Restore platform access first.
3

Sign out of conflicting accounts

Multiple active Google or platform sessions can send the authorization flow to the wrong identity.

  • Sign out of unrelated platform accounts.
  • Use a private browsing window if account selection remains confusing.
  • Sign in only to the Google account that manages the Search Console property and the platform account being verified.
Common result: The verification flow now displays the intended account instead of a different profile.
4

Restart the official connection flow

Return to Search Console and use the property warning, reconnect prompt or Add property flow. Complete every authorization screen without closing the browser tab early.

  • Choose the correct supported platform.
  • Select the exact account or channel.
  • Approve only the permissions shown in the official flow.
Security check: Do not enter platform credentials into an unrelated third-party form.
5

Allow cookies and pop-ups temporarily

Sign-in and authorization flows can fail when a browser blocks the redirect, third-party cookies or pop-up window needed to finish verification.

  • Retry in an updated browser.
  • Temporarily permit the official sign-in pop-up.
  • Disable aggressive content blocking only for the verification attempt, then restore your preferred settings.
Useful test: Try the same flow in another browser or device you trust.
6

Return to the property selector

After authorization succeeds, confirm that the property appears in Search Console and opens without an ownership warning.

  • Check the property name and connected account.
  • Do not expect performance data immediately.
  • Record the successful verification date.
Success condition: You can open the property and view its reports, even if those reports are still empty.
7

Preserve the existing property when reauthenticating

If an established property lost authorization, reconnect through the existing property whenever possible. Google says reauthentication restores access to the same reports rather than requiring data to accumulate from the beginning again.

  • Use the reconnect prompt on the affected property.
  • Avoid creating a duplicate property unless the original cannot be recovered.
  • Check prior date ranges after access returns.
Benefit: Your historical reporting context remains in one property.
Verification is fixed when: the property opens without an ownership warning, the connected account is correct and Search Console no longer asks you to reauthenticate. Data may still require several days to populate.

After verification succeeds

A successful connection and a populated report are separate milestones.

Frequently asked questions

Why did a previously verified platform property lose access?

Search Console periodically checks ownership. An expired external login or a change in account access can require reauthentication.

Will reconnecting erase historical data?

Google says that when an expired connection is reauthenticated, access returns to the same reports without waiting for data to accumulate again.

Can I verify several platform accounts as one property?

Each profile, account or channel should be added as its own platform property so that its data can be tracked independently.

Why do I not see the option to add a platform property?

The feature is being rolled out gradually, so the setup option may not yet be available in every Search Console account.
